Color Spot Drawing

Online Course (5 Weeks)

Saturdays 5-8 PM EST (2-5 PM PST)

Jan 11- Feb 8, 2025

Taking inspiration from the “color spot” painting lineage associated with Charles Hawthorne, this class teaches students to build drawings with abstract shapes of value and color. Using a variety of media including graphite, ballpoint pen, color pencil, and collage, students will learn how to create painterly drawings that tow the line between form and abstraction. Class assignments will also feature a variety of subject matter including still images of figure models, landscapes, and still life.

The objective of the class is to give students an accessible and modern perspective on drawing to enhance their sketching or painting practice. This class is especially useful for anyone who feels "stuck" in their art practice and would like to "loosen up" their drawing style. The class is suitable for all skill levels.

Class time will encompass in-depth demonstrations, lecture, Q/A, and individual feedback for the Full Seat participants. Classes will meet on Zoom.  Homework, class recordings, and class materials will be available through Padlet.  Zoom Link will be emailed to student two weeks before the first class meets.

**Sessions are live and are recorded, students do not have to be present. All recordings will be available to students for 6 months after the final session.
